Welcome to Ohinewai School
Ohinewai School is situated within a small settlement in the Waikato Region. We are located on the east bank of the Waikato River, and to the west is the Waikato Expressway which provides quick access to Hamilton, Auckland and surrounding townships. The ease of the expressway has seen the development of light industrial firms also establishing themselves at Ohinewai. Most significant was July 2019, when Comfort Group announced its intention to create an affordable housing estate in Ohinewai. It has purchased 176 ha of land with the intention of developing 1100 homes with obvious impact on Ohinewai School in the future. We are also supported by our local marae, Matahuru Papakainga, which is a traditional meeting ground for the Waikato Tainui hapū of Ngāti Makirangi, Ngāti Mahuta and Ngāti Naho, and the Ngāpuhi hapū of Ngāti Hine.
Ohinewai School is a co-educational state primary school for Year 1 to 8 students, with a roll of approximately 120 students who come from surrounding small townships situated near Ohinewai. Our school community is a diverse mix of families from the farming industry, self employed, and families who work in surrounding businesses. We have a very supportive PTA who support us with fundraising events, and the Calf Club team who ensure our annual Calf Club and Pet Day are a success. Our William Pike students are also strongly supported by the local community to ensure their community service hours are achievable. Ohinewai School is well resourced with a permanent shade area, astro turf, a large field and playground area, and we are currently in the process of updating our Learning through Play paddock and animal area. We are lucky to have our own school swimming pool where daily lessons can be held during the warmer months. We also use the community pools in Huntly for our swimming sports competition.
Our school motto is “Rural School of Our Future”, and this filters throughout our localised curriculum, embracing e-Learning with a range of 1:1 modern devices as integral tools for supporting and enhancing quality teaching and learning in this 21st Century. We also belong to the Too Taatou Haerenga Kaahui Ako, where together we have a mission to ensure our children reach the highest pinnacle of Taupiri.
We have a dedicated staff who work above and beyond for all their students making this school a successful place for everyone to reach their own potential. If you would like to learn more about our amazing rural school and what we offer, please email a time to come and see our learning in action.
